Newsfeed

What is a Newsfeed

The news headlines from World Music Central (WMC) are available in the RSS format for use in news readers and news aggregators

The news feed updates when news headlines are updated and shows the last 10 news items and their short text summaries. It is common practice to use this icon to denote an RSS feed

What is the URL of the news feed

http://www.worldmusiccentral.org/backend/worldmusiccentral.rdf
Please note that this is not a normal web page, but in XML. Internet Explorer should display the page in tree view.

What is RSS

RSS is a Web content syndication format.

Its name is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication.

RSS is dialect of XML. All RSS files must conform to the XML 1.0 specification, as published on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) website.

World Music Central's news feed is RSS version 2.0 and should be compatible with any RSS news reader or aggregators

More technical information about RSS is available at userland.com

What is a news reader and where can I find one

A news reader is a program that translates the news feed to human readable content and links

There is a good list of news readers for Windows, Macintosh and Linux here

What are the restrictions and rules for using this news feed

  • Do not alter the news descriptions or titles (translation is ok)
  • Cache the news on your server if you have a high traffic site. Do not load the news feed more than once every five minutes.
  • Keep the links back to WMC intact.
  • The news feed is for Non-commercial use only

How do I put WMC's news on my web site

This depends on how you built your web site.

If you are using a backend system such as Geeklog, PHPNuke or Slash, you should be able to use the direct link above and create a RSS news box. Consult your documentation for more information.

If you have CGI, PHP or ASP on your web server you can use any of the RSS parsers available at HotScripts.com

We have also made a javascript based RSS feed. You can cut and paste the following code into your web page and get the news on your site. Please do not use this option if you have a high traffic web site as it loads the news from WMC each time your page loads and this puts additional stress on our server.
